The Mediterranean Aperitivo Project, a campaign funded by the European Union to promote European quality products, has made a significant impact in New York as part of its three-year U.S. tour. Designed to introduce American food and beverage professionals to the rich cultural tradition of the aperitivo, the project has engaged with local audiences through tastings, seminars, and restaurant events in several cities, including New York.

The aperitivo, originating from the Latin term for “open,” is a pre-meal tradition designed to stimulate the appetite. While it began as a simple glass of aromatized wine or bitters, it has evolved into a celebrated social and culinary ritual across Mediterranean countries like Italy, France, and Spain. The Mediterranean Aperitivo Project aims to bring this sophisticated tradition to the U.S., showcasing high-quality products with European PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) and PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) certifications, ensuring authenticity and excellence.

New York’s events featured tastings led by expert food and beverage educators, highlighting the versatility and quality of the featured products. Vermouth di Torino PGI, a premier Italian vermouth, was showcased as both a cocktail ingredient and a standalone beverage, paired with Pecorino Toscano PDO, a flavorful sheep’s milk cheese from Tuscany, and Greek olives from Aitoloakarnania and Ilia, known for their delicate texture and robust flavor. Costa d’Amalfi lemons PGI, with their intense aroma and taste, were also presented as an ideal garnish for aperitivo cocktails.

These events catered to New York’s vibrant food and beverage community, including sommeliers, mixologists, restaurant owners, and chefs. Attendees learned about the cultural significance of the aperitivo, proper serving techniques, and how to pair Vermouth di Torino with Mediterranean ingredients to elevate dining experiences.

The Mediterranean Aperitivo Project’s presence in New York reflects the city’s status as a culinary hub and its openness to global traditions. By bringing the aperitivo culture to local professionals and consumers, the project fosters a deeper appreciation for European heritage while supporting high-quality, sustainably produced ingredients.

As New York continues to embrace global culinary influences, the Mediterranean Aperitivo stands out as a sophisticated and flavorful addition to the city’s food and beverage scene, connecting local professionals to the timeless traditions of Europe.
