New York will distribute $100m to support thirty projects that will build or renovate community centers across the state. Governor Kathy Hochul said this week the effort is intended to strengthen access to recreational spaces and services that support physical health, mental well being and social connection for children, families and older adults.

The grants come through the Building Recreational Infrastructure for Communities Kids and Seniors program, known as NY BRICKS, which was funded in the current state budget. The projects are expected to serve nearly four hundred thousand residents.

Hochul said the funding reflects a commitment to create stronger and healthier neighborhoods in every region of the state. She noted that the grants will help communities create places where children can play, families can spend time together and older residents can remain active.

The awards will support work in 22 counties. More than 90% of the funding will go to areas identified as underserved. Grants range from $260k to $15m  and may be used for design, construction, renovation or land acquisition. State officials selected projects based on need, community benefit and readiness, with preference for centers that provide services such as childcare, eldercare and mental health support.

The initiative places a focus on equitable investment in community centers that provide accessible recreation, safe spaces for gatherings and essential programs for youth, families and seniors. Each project requires a matching contribution equal to 20% of the state award.

A list of recipients is available on the state website.
