New Yorkers will soon be able to file their taxes online for free through the expanded Direct File program, a user-friendly, no-cost tool developed in partnership with the IRS. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the program’s growth, emphasizing its potential to save millions of New Yorkers an average of $260 in tax preparation fees.

Governor Hochul highlighted her administration’s efforts to make tax filing more accessible and affordable, noting that the Direct File program simplifies a traditionally complex process. “New Yorkers deserve relief from the burdens of tax season,” said the Governor. “By expanding Direct File, we’re providing a straightforward, free option that keeps more money in people’s pockets.”

The program, piloted in 2024, initially targeted taxpayers with straightforward returns. In its first year, it served 14,000 New Yorkers, with 96% reporting a positive experience. The 2025 expansion broadens eligibility, incorporating additional tax credits and income types, allowing more residents to benefit.

New Yorkers with 2024 income up to $200,000—or $250,000 for joint filers—may qualify for the program. Direct File is designed for those with basic returns, including common deductions and credits. Acting New York State Tax Commissioner Amanda Hiller described the platform as safe, secure, and user-friendly, accessible on various devices.

This year’s tax filing season begins later this month and concludes on April 15. Direct File will be available when the season opens. To determine eligibility and learn more, visit the New York State Tax Department’s website.

Direct File is part of Governor Hochul’s broader affordability agenda, aimed at delivering financial relief to New Yorkers facing rising costs. Alongside other free e-filing options, the program reinforces the administration’s commitment to making life easier and more affordable for residents statewide.
