The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced its plans for New Year’s holiday service, with most agencies operating on weekend or holiday schedules. To accommodate revelers heading into the city for celebrations and attendees of Billy Joel’s New Year’s Eve concert at UBS Arena, the MTA is adding extra subway and commuter rail service.

On New Year’s Eve, New York City subways will run on a regular weekday schedule, with increased service on key lines in the evening and post-midnight hours. Additional LIRR trains will operate on several branches, and Metro-North will provide extra late-evening and post-midnight trains. Access-A-Ride will maintain 24/7 service, with some adjustments near Times Square due to street closures.

New Year’s Day will see subways and buses running on a Sunday schedule, while LIRR and Metro-North will also operate adjusted service to accommodate holiday travelers. MTA Bridges and Tunnels will pause daytime road closures through January 2.

For real-time updates, customers can use the MTA app, TrainTime app, or visit mta.info. Social media channels like X (@MTA) and WhatsApp are available for customer support. Riders can also call 511 for information. The MTA encourages travelers to plan ahead and utilize these resources to ensure smooth holiday travel.
