The New York State Department of State has announced nearly $20 million in funding to support 56 communities across the state through Round XIV of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. This funding, distributed through the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, Brownfield Opportunity Area Program, and Smart Growth Community Planning Program, aims to revitalize waterfronts, transform brownfield sites, and create plans that adhere to Smart Growth principles.

Among the 56 recipients, 35 awards (63%) will benefit disadvantaged communities. Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley praised the programs as instrumental in driving community revitalization and economic growth, highlighting their role in fostering a statewide renaissance.

The Local Waterfront Revitalization Program awarded $14.2 million to 21 communities for projects expanding public access, protecting the environment, and boosting economic opportunities. The Brownfield Opportunity Area Program allocated $3 million to 15 communities for transforming blighted sites into community assets, while the Smart Growth Community Planning Program provided $2.5 million to 20 communities to develop plans emphasizing walkability, vibrant downtowns, and diverse housing options.

Funded through New York’s Environmental Protection Fund, these initiatives are part of the broader Regional Economic Development Council strategy, emphasizing community-driven economic planning and streamlined access to state resources.
