Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the 2025 winter events schedule for New York State’s Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) venues, featuring premier international competitions and commemorative activities.
The lineup includes World Cups in three sports and the International Bobsled & Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Championships, reinforcing Lake Placid’s reputation as a global hub for winter sports.
The announcement comes amid discussions designating Lake Placid as the Plan B backup location for sliding events for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games.
“For decades, New York State’s commitment to winter sports has kept the Olympic flame burning bright in Lake Placid,” said Governor Hochul. “This schedule reflects the strength of our investments in maintaining Lake Placid’s legacy and its ability to host world-class events.”
Key Highlights
– World Championships and World Cups:
Lake Placid will host the IBSF Bobsled & Skeleton World Championships in March 2025, a prestigious event often referred to as the “Super Bowl” of sliding sports. Additional highlights include the FIS Aerials World Cup (Jan. 18-19), FIS Ski Jumping World Cup with men’s and women’s events (Feb. 7-9), and the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships (Feb. 12-16).
– Milano Cortina 2026 Dialogue:
Lake Placid is being considered as a Plan B site for sliding events during the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, thanks to the State’s investment in modernizing ORDA facilities. This partnership envisions leveraging the Olympic legacy and the vibrancy of New York City to offer athletes and fans a unique Olympic experience.
– Commemorating the 1980 Winter Olympics:
The upcoming year marks the 45th anniversary of the 1980 Winter Olympics, celebrated for iconic moments like the “Miracle on Ice.” Special activities, including a new flag mural featuring local students’ artwork, will honor this milestone.
– “Buffalo Bobsled” Experience:
ORDA will showcase a custom-designed bobsled inspired by Buffalo Bills football at the Billevard Fan Zone in Orchard Park on Dec. 29, connecting sports fans to Lake Placid’s upcoming competitions.
Ashley Walden, President and CEO of the Olympic Authority, noted, “Hosting international events and enhancing our venues strengthens the region’s economy and tourism. These investments ensure Lake Placid remains a destination for athletes and visitors year-round.”
Empire State Development President and CEO Hope Knight added, “The breadth of events scheduled for 2025 highlights the importance of New York’s investments in these facilities, which draw global audiences and generate economic benefits for surrounding communities.”
Beyond winter sports, ORDA venues now offer year-round attractions such as scenic gondola rides, a mountain coaster at Mt. Van Hoevenberg, and a zipline at Gore Mountain. These activities expand tourism opportunities in the Adirondacks and Catskills, ensuring lasting economic impact for the region.
The Olympic Regional Development Authority, established in 1982, manages the iconic Lake Placid venues used during the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. ORDA continues to drive tourism, bolster regional economies, and maintain world-class facilities for athletes and visitors alike.
With its rich Olympic history and cutting-edge infrastructure, Lake Placid remains a beacon for winter sports enthusiasts and a testament to New York State’s commitment to excellence in sport and tourism.
