Governor Kathy Hochul announced this week the completion of a major project that has transformed the Greater Binghamton Airport into a modern travel hub for the Southern Tier.

With support from $32 million in funding from the state’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, the redesigned terminal now offers improved passenger flow and incorporates visual elements inspired by the region’s natural landscape. The airport’s main access road was also reconstructed and the general aviation terminal was relocated to streamline operations.

The Greater Binghamton Airport was one of nine upstate airports awarded funding in the state’s $230 million investment initiative, which aims to help regional airports meet modern travel demands. Built in 1945 and serving more than 36,000 annual enplanements, the airport has not undergone significant upgrades in more than 20 years. It supports both commercial travel and corporate activity, serving companies such as Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, The Raymond Corporation, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Binghamton University. According to the latest data, the airport contributes over $56 million in yearly economic activity.

The $54 million project created more than 500 jobs and brought a cohesive design across the terminal using wood accents to echo the surrounding forested hills. New entryways were added to offer direct views through the terminal and out to the nearby landscape.

Renovations included a redesigned entry area with a new canopy and portals, an updated ticketing lobby and baggage area, and a remodeled departures lounge. The baggage claim space was rebuilt and rental car counters were relocated. A new TSA checkpoint and passenger boarding bridges were installed. The airport also added new restrooms, offices, and a multi-purpose room. A new parking system was implemented and improvements were made to HVAC systems and the airport road.

Administered by the New York State Department of Transportation, the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition provides funding for commercial airports across the region. Projects are evaluated based on design, amenities, operational efficiency, and potential for long-term economic benefit.

Senator Chuck Schumer noted that federal infrastructure legislation helped fund the project and said the upgraded terminal will support Southern Tier tourism, improve safety, and grow the regional economy. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand called the airport a key connector for travel and business, adding that the improvements deliver the modern infrastructure travelers deserve. Representative Josh Riley said the project created jobs and better travel conditions while addressing infrastructure needs.

State Senator Lea Webb said the facility will draw new visitors and support broader economic development across the region. Assemblymember Donna Lupardo praised the attention to detail and design, emphasizing the airport’s role in showcasing the area and boosting regional aviation. Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said the project reflects a long-term investment in the area’s future and was completed with strong support from state and federal partners.

In September 2022, Governor Hochul announced awards for nine airports across the state as part of a wider effort to upgrade travel infrastructure. Other recipients included airports in Albany, Watertown, Saratoga County, Syracuse, Sullivan County, Ogdensburg, Rochester, and the Adirondacks. Each project helps create a stronger, more connected upstate economy with airports equipped for modern use.
