In a significant move to enhance Long Island’s transportation infrastructure, New York State is allocating $150 million to connect the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Ronkonkoma Station with the proposed North Terminal at MacArthur Airport. This investment aims to improve transit accessibility, stimulate job creation, and bolster the region’s economy.
The project includes constructing a pedestrian walkway between the airport and the LIRR station, redesigning road networks, and upgrading essential infrastructure. These enhancements are expected to reduce travel times and position MacArthur Airport as a key transportation hub for Long Island.
This funding builds upon a previous $40 million state commitment in 2022 for the new North Terminal. Suffolk County will contribute an additional $50 million towards infrastructure improvements. The combined efforts aim to lay the foundation for long-term economic growth, create high-quality jobs, and provide new opportunities for residents and businesses in the community.
MacArthur Airport, established as a military airfield in 1942, currently serves over 1.6 million passengers annually. The planned improvements are anticipated to enhance passenger experience, encourage the use of public transportation, and reduce road congestion.
This initiative aligns with Governor Kathy Hochul’s broader vision for Long Island, which focuses on strengthening transit networks, expanding housing access, and fostering job creation. By improving connectivity and unlocking the potential of 48 acres of land surrounding the station, the project is expected to drive further development and tourism growth in the region.
The investment underscores the state’s commitment to building modern, efficient transit systems that facilitate daily life and fuel local economic growth. By enhancing critical infrastructure, New York aims to unlock new opportunities for businesses, tourism, and economic development across Long Island.
