Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at John F. Kennedy International Airport prevented a New York City resident from boarding a flight yesterday with a loaded 9mm handgun. The firearm, containing 12 bullets, was detected during routine security screening. Port Authority Police were alerted, leading to the confiscation of the weapon and the arrest of the individual on weapons charges. The passenger also faces a federal civil penalty, which can reach up to $15,000 for such offenses.
This incident underscores the ongoing issue of travelers attempting to bring firearms through airport security. In 2023, TSA officers at JFK intercepted 15 firearms at checkpoints, a notable increase from previous years. Nationwide, the TSA reported a record number of firearms detected at airport checkpoints in 2023, with over 6,500 guns found, 88% of which were loaded.
The TSA emphasizes that firearms are prohibited in carry-on luggage. To transport a firearm, passengers must ensure it is unloaded, packed in a locked hard-sided case, and declared at the airline counter for placement in checked baggage. Violations can result in substantial fines and the loss of TSA PreCheck® privileges.
