Governor Kathy Hochul announced the launch of the 2025 State Parks Wellness Challenge, encouraging New Yorkers to embrace mental and physical well-being through outdoor recreation. Starting January 1, the challenge invites participants to complete 50 wellness-focused missions at state parks and historic sites across New York throughout the year.
The initiative builds on the Governor’s “Get Offline, Get Outside” campaign, introduced in 2024, to promote mental health, physical activity, and social engagement by encouraging families to disconnect from technology and explore the state’s natural and historic treasures.
“New York’s state parks offer unmatched opportunities to connect with nature and prioritize wellness,” Hochul said. “This challenge is a great way for New Yorkers and visitors alike to start the year by exploring the outdoors, improving health, and creating memorable experiences.”
The challenge features missions that highlight various dimensions of wellness, including mental, physical, social, environmental, and financial health. Participants can track their progress digitally through the Goosechase app or use printed brochures available at over 250 state parks and historic sites. Completing 25 missions earns participants a commemorative sticker and postcard.
Examples of missions include:
– Mental Wellness: A “Digital Detox” at a state park, focusing on being present without technology.
– Physical Wellness: Starting the year with a “First Day Hike.”
– Social Wellness: Exploring a new park with friends.
– Environmental Wellness: Using reusable water bottles during hikes.
– Financial Wellness: Informing a veteran about the Lifetime Liberty Pass for free or discounted park access.
New York State Parks Commissioner Pro Tempore Randy Simons highlighted the mental health benefits of outdoor activities, noting that spending time in nature reduces stress, boosts resilience, and supports overall well-being. State Health Commissioner Dr. James V. McDonald echoed the benefits of physical activity, emphasizing its role in preventing chronic disease and improving heart health.
The challenge supports accessibility and inclusivity, enabling participants of all abilities to engage in wellness activities close to home or across the state. Participants can access the Goosechase app to join the challenge, upload photos and videos of completed tasks, or check off missions on the printed list available at local parks.
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation manages over 250 parks, historic sites, and recreational areas, which recorded 84 million visits in 2023.
