Port Authority Travel Advisory for December: Prepare for Delays and Plan Ahead

Port Authority Travel Advisory for December: Prepare for Delays and Plan Ahead
© Erik Odiin

As the holiday season continues, travelers in the New York and New Jersey region are urged to plan ahead due to lane closures and service adjustments at key transportation hubs. From December 9 onwards, ongoing infrastructure upgrades and maintenance projects will impact travel at the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, Bayonne Bridge, and Goethals Bridge.

AirTrain Newark Service Adjustments For those traveling through Newark Liberty International Airport, maintenance work on AirTrain Newark will limit service to operations between the P4 and Rail Link stations during select nighttime hours. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate transportation connecting all stations and terminals. Travelers should anticipate minor delays and allow additional time for transit.

JFK Airport Redevelopment Project At John F. Kennedy International Airport, significant construction associated with the $19 billion redevelopment project will result in roadway closures and detours. Travelers using for-hire vehicle services at Terminal 4 should note that pickups have been relocated to the Remote Ride App & Car Services Lot. Free shuttle buses will ferry passengers from Terminal 4 to the lot.

The Port Authority strongly recommends using mass transit options, such as MTA subways, buses, or the Long Island Rail Road, for access to JFK. Trains operate frequently, with direct connections to AirTrain JFK at Jamaica Station for seamless transfers to airport terminals. For motorists, a free waiting lot is available at the Lefferts Boulevard AirTrain JFK station, with convenient on-airport AirTrain connections.

Prepare for Holiday Travel With these developments, the Port Authority advises all travelers to:

  • Use Mass Transit: Opt for public transportation to avoid delays.
  • Allow Extra Time: Build additional travel time into your schedule, especially if driving to JFK.
  • Stay Informed: Visit Construction.JFKAirport.com for real-time updates and customized travel information.

These efforts are part of the Port Authority’s commitment to improving infrastructure and transforming JFK into a world-class global gateway. Travelers should remain vigilant and adaptable as projects progress to enhance the region’s transit and airport systems.
